Program:
Rome, Italy, and Fourteenth-Century Europe through a Masterpiece of Italian Literature: The Cronica of the Anonymous Roman.

The course is devoted to the Cronica of the Anonymous Roman, written in the Roman vernacular around 1360. The chronicle will be examined in depth, with particular attention to the identity and intellectual profile of its anonymous author, his aims, political outlook, and cultural background. This analysis will provide a basis for exploring the Roman, Italian, and European worlds portrayed in the Cronica.

Text books:
  1. Anonimo Romano, Cronica, a cura di Giuseppe Porta (una qualsiasi edizione, ma fra quelle curate da Giuseppe Porta)

  2. Sandro Carocci, Baroni di Roma. Dominazioni signorili e lignaggi aristocratici nel Duecento e nel primo Trecento, Roma 1993 (scaricabile qui: https://www.persee.fr/doc/efr_0000-0000_1993_ths_181_1 )

  3. I documenti e i saggi indicati e/o discussi a lezione.
